What's the difference between Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes?
Class 1
Pedal-assist only, no throttle, max 20 mph. Allowed almost everywhere — bike lanes, trails, paths. Most permissive class.
Class 2
Throttle-assist allowed, max 20 mph. Generally allowed on bike paths. Some trails may restrict throttle bikes.
Class 3
Pedal-assist only, max 28 mph (some states 25 mph). Most restrictions — often banned from bike paths and trails, age minimums apply, helmet required in many states.
Most e-bike tickets issued to teens are for riding Class 2/3 bikes on sidewalks or trails where they're prohibited. Know your class, know your rules.
